Diversity in South Dakota Museums

2019 ASDM conference is exploring cultures in the heart of SD, hosted by the South Dakota Hall of Fame.

This year's theme is celebrating cultures in exhibits, educational programming, and collections management. 

Registration and schedule of events will also be sent via mail.

6:30 – 8:00 PM Opening Reception/Registration

 @ Arrowwood Resort at Cedar Shores,1500 Shoreline Dr, Oacoma, SD

Relax and meet with friends while enjoying appetizers.  Cash bar available.


Friday, May 3

Registration and silent auction begins

8:00 AM @ South Dakota Hall of Fame. Serving coffee, rolls, and fruit.

9:00 AM   Donors Leaving a Legacy

Learn about the different ways donors can include your museum in their estate plan. Presented by the South Dakota Community Foundation


BREAK - 15 minutes


10:00 AM  What is a Culturally Inclusive Museum?

Dr. Erica Moore from Lower Brule Community College will discuss respectful ways to address cultures not your own and how this might look in a museum setting.


11:00 AM   Between the Covers: Your Museum in a Book

Thinking about publishing? Patricia Bornhofen  of the the National Music Museum shares helpful pointers and thoughts from recent, firsthand book-publishing experience.


Lunch 12:00 PM@ SD Hall of Fame

Make-your-own Sandwich Bar with a selection of assorted breads, ham, turkey, roast beef, two kinds of cheeses, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, mayo and mustard.  Side dishes include  an Italian pasta salad and a fresh vegetable salad. There would be ice tea and lemonade for drinks and a cookie for dessert.  Tickets are $15.


1:30 PM Sharing Indigenous perspective of the Dakota War of 1862

Tamara St. John of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Tribal Historic Preservation Office discusses interpreting this conflict.


2:30 PM The Amazing Race

Learn how Codington County Historical Society uses community partners and landmarks to teach local history to K-12 students.


BREAK - 15 minutes


3:30 PM  Bring Your Own Questions

 A participant-driven-round-table discussion where you suggest the topic.

 

4:30 PM Silent Auction Ends



Friday Reception: Tour the Akta Lakota Museum & Dignity Statue
5:00 – 7:00 PM at the Akta Lakota Museum

1301 N Main St, Chamberlain, SD

A behind the scenes tour of the Akta Lakota Museum  with hors d’oeuvres. Followed by a tour of Dignity Statue. Please indicate if you are attending. The event is free with conference registration

Saturday, May 4

8:00 AM ASDM Member Breakfast  

At the South Dakota Hall of Fame

A buffet breakfast with eggs, sausage, hashbrowns, toast, fresh fruit, orange juice and coffee. Free for members, $10 for non-members. Please indicate if you will be attending.


9:00 AM Traditional Native American Games

Experience different games and learn their historical significance in this hands-on session with Hope Kleine.

10:00 AM How to Move a Collection While Maintaining Your Sanity

Kari Kohlhoff discusses what the Siouxland Heritage Museums staff  learned while moving their collection to a new storage facility.


11:00 AM Protocols for Native American Archival Materials

Tawa Ducheneaux of Oglala Lakota College will discuss connecting community and stakeholders to develop best practices for implementing cultural protocols in policy and collections care.
