    Building on the Past for the Future!


    Join us in Yankton at the Mead Cultural Education Center!  In the city where the Dakota Territorial Capital once stood, we explore how to build stronger institutions from traditional benchmarks to the latest technology. We will learn first hand how preserving history can enhance and grow our communities.

    Jessie Nesseim (Siouxland Heritage Museums) will talk about her experience at the AASLH 3-week
    leadership development seminar.

    Caring for your Historic Building
    Your building may be your largest artifact. Learn tips to preserve and care for it from Architect
    Brad Ciavarella.

    Lunch – Stay and mingle. Tickets are $15. “Make-Your-Own Sandwich Bar” includes choice of meat,
    cheese, toppings, side salads, drink, and dessert. Silent auction bidding continues…

    Crystal Nelson (Dakota Territorial Museum) will share her experience on managing the restoration of
    the Mead Cultural Education Center and offer some helpful tips.

    Finding the Right Tech for Exhibits
    Gwen McCausland (South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum) will highlight some different apps and
    tech options for museums without an IT staff.

    10:00 AM Building Productive Boards: One Size Does Not Fit All
    Jay Smith (State History Museum) and Jennifer Hoesing (Stockyards Experience) will discuss their experiences as well as strategies for building the right board for a variety of museum types.
    Formal presentations will be followed by an open discussion of board development, board related issues and where to find additional help and advice.

    Sharing your Collections using Social Media
    Not everything can be physically on display. Jakob Etrheim (End-O-Line Railroad Park and Museum) shares how you can get your collection in the public eye via social media platforms. It is more
    than posting a picture.
