The Association of South Dakota Museums supports and acknowledges outstanding contributions to the museum field. Members of ASDM are invited to nominate individuals or museums for the Excellence in Exhibits, Excellence in Leadership, or Excellence in Community Programming or Collaboration awards.

• The Excellence in Exhibits Award is awarded to museums for work in exhibitions during the past year. Nominations should include general exhibit information for the nominated exhibit and an explanation of the significance, success and/or innovation of the exhibit.

• The Excellence in Leadership Award is given to individuals for work that exemplifies dedication and leadership in the South Dakota museum field during the past year. Nominations should outline the achievements and contributions of the nominee in relation to the South Dakota museum community.

• The Excellence in Community Programming or Collaboration Award is given to museums for work in the past year that reflects the spirit of community engagement. Nominations should highlight efforts that engage your community, create new audiences for the South Dakota community, or collaborate with community partners in an innovative and successful way. These projects could include but are not limited to interpretive exhibitions, lecture series, programming, or community collaboration.

Awards are only available to ASDM members museums, their staff, board members, and volunteers. With very low registration, it has been decided to cancel the Gift Shop Management workshop scheduled for Hill City on October 24, 2019. We intend to offer gift shop management as a session at the ASDM 2020 annual conference in Rapid City April 30-May 2 instead. Mona Jackson

Mona Kumar Jackson is an entrepreneur who is co-owner of Killian’s restaurant in Spearfish, SD. She also owned and operated a boutique (Ventana) in downtown Spearfish for a year and a half.

Mona holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology (1988), a Master’s degree in Education (1991) with an emphasis in Higher Education Administration, both from James Madison University and a certificate in Accounting (2012) from the University of Louisville. She was employed in Higher Education for over twenty years before segwaying into her adventures as an entrepreneur.

Mona has lived in the Northern Black Hills since the summer of 2014. In that time she has become involved with the community/city on many levels. She sits on the board of Visit Spearfish, is a planning member on two of the South Dakota Center for Enterprise Opportunity (SDCEO) committees, and is the current treasurer of the Downtown Business Association. As a local business owner she has had many opportunities to interface with the Chamber of Commerce and the Spearfish Economic Development Corporation.

Mona is married to Tom with whom she has two children (TJ and Chandi).

 Blanche Farrar

Blanche Farrar is the Manager of Everything Prehistoric, gift shop of the Black Hills Institute of Geological Research, Inc., and caretaker for the daily needs of the Museum at the Black Hills Institute in Hill City. 

In this capacity, she oversees purchasing, merchandising, advertising, event planning, shipping, sales, customer service, web development, social media, marketing and advertising. 

She enjoys and shares this work with a great team of dedicated team members at the Institute.

“Highlighting the History of Women’s Suffrage

I have been working on the history of women’s suffrage for nearly a year for different projects and efforts around the centennials of state suffrage in 2018 and the 19^th amendment in 2019-2020.  There is so much interesting state and local history about the movement for equal suffrage… 

I eventually started the following website (part of my personal blog site) to record my notes (in a refined version) as I work on them: https://historysouthdakota.wordpress.com/womens-suffrage-in-sodak/

I’d like to start a page on the site that features a list of local museums and archives with collection materials or exhibit displays about the suffrage movement.  I’d hope it would provide information for those who might be doing research, or looking for places to visit.

Grant Application Guidelines

PURPOSE

            The Association of South Dakota Museums (ASDM) believes that museums have an irreplaceable role in South Dakota as guardians of our cultural and natural history legacies. They are vital educational resources and drivers of economic prosperity. Museums add greatly to the quality of life for South Dakotans. ASDM supports its organizational members through grants which are designed to help museums of all sizes, types and budgets fulfill their important missions.

ELIGIBILITY

            ASDM grants can be awarded to any ASDM Institutional Member who has an eligible 501c3 status.

            Grant applications will be considered in two institutional budget categories – Large (over $75,000 annual budget) and Small – (under $75,000 annual budget). Every effort will be made to award ASDM grant monies to institutions in each budget category but this is not guaranteed. Grant awards are determined on the merit of each application. In any given year the winning applications may come from either or both budget categories.

REQUIREMENTS

- Applicants MUST BE CURRENT ASDM INSTITUTIONAL MEMBERS and have a qualifying 501c3 status, be a government entity or other IRS-recognized charitable organization. 

- Grant projects must meet the standards set forth in the ASDM Grant Project Standards (below).

- A 1-to-1 grant match is required. In-kind services can be used to meet the grant match.

- Institutions may submit only one application per year. Grant winners are not eligible to reapply for three years after receiving an ASDM grant.

- Grant recipients are required to complete their grant-funded project within twelve months of the date awarded.

- Recipients must submit a follow up report on the grant project no later than May 30^th of the next calendar year to ASDM for use in marketing materials, newsletter or website.

APPLICATIONS MUST BE RECEIVED BY APRIL 1

Applications must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. MST for consideration.

Notification of awards will be made within the following month.

PROJECT STANDARDS

            The scope and variety of grant projects is wide, but winning projects must demonstrate practical standards for museum improvement.

            ASDM will consider grants for the following types of projects:

general collections care; public programming; critical maintenance projects; exhibit design and development; collections storage; improved technology; collections consultants; staff training; security issues.

            This list is not exhaustive, and ASDM will consider other projects and encourages creativity in applicants for funding.

            ASDM will not consider grants for:

 General operating support; fundraising events; food or catering services; staff salaries or stipends; travel expenses; cosmetic building improvements. Regranting ASDM monies is not allowed.

AMOUNTS

            No ASDM grant award will exceed $500. Recipients may be awarded partial grant funding less than the total amount requested in their application. The number of awards granted each year will vary as funding is determined by ASDM’s annual revenue, which may fluctuate. 

SELECTION PROCESS

            Applications will be reviewed by a committee of peer reviewers using a written rubric to score each application. The committee will make recommendations for grant awards to the ASDM Board. The Board will make final decisions and approval of grants via a board vote. Any grant reviewers or board members from organizations submitting grant applications will abstain from the selection process.  Applicants will be notified of their status within thirty days of the grant deadline. Successful applicants will be announced at the annual ASDM conference.
